What Is Ranch Seasoning?

Ranch seasoning is a blend of dried herbs and powdered buttermilk. The fresh, tangy flavor goes well with salad, but it also is excellent for meat and party dips. And, of course, ranch dressing and dip wouldn’t be the same without it.

Recipe Ingredients

What you need for this recipe
  1. Buttermilk Powder – While a ranch dressing recipe uses buttermilk in liquid form, the powdered stuff gives you the flexibility and convenience of having this versatile seasoning mix forever on hand.
  2. Dried Herbs – Parsley, basil, onion powder, garlic powder, dill leaves, chives, and black pepper all party together for the perfectly seasoned dip.

How to Make Ranch Seasoning

Ranch seasoning ready to mix for convenience
  • First Easy Step – Get your ingredients together.
  • Second Easy Step – Then combine them all; buttermilk powder, parsley, basil, dill leaves, onion powder, and garlic powder in a medium bowl or jar. Add freshly cracked black pepper and salt to taste and stir until thoroughly combined.

Recipe Variations

  1. Ramp up the flavor factor when you make your dip with chopped fresh cilantro and a squeeze of lemon. (Dried cilantro has NO taste, so wait until you can use it fresh.)
  2. You could substitute the parsley with dried oregano or tarragon.
  3. For a vegan option, omit the powdered buttermilk and add fresh vegan sour cream or buttermilk when you make your recipe. If you can find vegan powdered buttermilk, that would also work.

Tips and Tricks

  1. For a finer texture, grind the ingredients in a blender, spice grinder, or mortar and pestle.
  2. Check the expiration dates on your dried herbs because you want this mix to last as long as possible. It’s only as fresh as the ingredients you use.

Make-Ahead Instructions

This Ranch Seasoning blend can be made days, weeks, or months ahead. If you use fresh ingredients, it will keep for six months or more.

Serving and Storage Instructions

You can sprinkle this deliciousness over mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables, popcorn (😍), and other snacks. Store the dry seasoning mix at room temperature in an airtight glass jar or ziplock bag.

Make your ranch dip by mixing two tablespoons of dry seasoning into a cup of sour cream, plain yogurt, or mayo. You could also use it for this delicious homemade ranch dressing recipe (cold or room temp). 😉 Once made, it can be kept in the fridge in an airtight container for a week.

FAQs

Is the seasoning healthy?

As it contains only natural ingredients and no preservatives or other additives, this recipe is indeed healthy.

Can you use fresh herbs?

You could, but you’d have to use it right away. This is a dry mix meant for convenience.

Is ranch seasoning mix the same for a dip or dressing?

Yes, the mix remains the same. The only difference between a dip and a dressing is the thickness. Make it thicker for a dip and thinner for a dressing.

Where to Use Ranch Seasoning

This seasoning is genuinely versatile, from meat to dips and dressings. Crunchy veggies, chicken wings, chips, and burgers all enjoy a touch of this wonder. Here are just a few suggestions:

  1. Ranch Potato Salad
  2. Cucumber Salmon Cream Cheese Appetizer
  3. Buffalo Chicken Dip
