How to Make Seasoned Salt

Seasoned salt ingredients

I have always been a fan of Lawry’s seasoned salt because it’s a quick way of seasoning any dish instead of just adding salt.

And recently I cracked up the secret and made my own. Oh yeah! And of course, because I’m Imma… I’m going to share it with you! 😉

You’ll love this DIY seasoned salt because it will save you a lot of time in seasoning your dishes.

Instead of adding the spices one by one to your dish, you can just add a dash or more of this seasoning blend and it’ll jazz up any dish in no time.

And because it’s DIY, you can easily customize it according to your most-used herbs and spices.

Just store it in a jar and it’s ready to use anytime!😉

What is Seasoned Salt?

Homemade Seasoned Salt in a Wooden Canister

This homemade seasoning is basically salt mixed with other spices like pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder. One of the most common brands is Lawry’s Seasoned Salt from Mccormick.

Commercially available seasoned salt ingredients often contain preservatives like monosodium glutamate and corn syrup solids. So if you’re a little health-conscious it is best to just make your own.

Seasoned Salt Ingredients

This Seasoned Salt Recipe is made with basic spices you probably already have in your pantry. Just mix them all together and voila! You now have an all-around seasoning that you can use any time.

  • Kosher Salt – table salt or Himalayan pink salt are okay, too.
  • Black Pepper – it’s like the other half of salt, they complete each other. Aaaw. Sweet! (I mean spicy and woody!😅)
  • Granulated Sugar – the sugar perfectly balances the salty and spicy flavor profiles of this seasoned salt recipe.
  • Paprika – we often use paprika to season our dishes to add flavors from bell pepper.
  • Onion and Garlic Powder – this adds savory flavors from garlic and onion without using the fresh ones.
  • Chili Powder – a little kick of heat always complements any dish.
  • Cayenne Pepper – feel free to add more if you’re into spicy food.
  • Cornstarch – this is optional but adding cornstarch will prevent our homemade seasoned salt from clumping.

Optional Ingredients

  • Cumin – this spice has an earthy, pungent, and mildly bitter taste but can make any dish flavorful.
  • Ground Mustard – it adds tangy flavor notes that make it a great addition to this homemade seasoning.
  • Ground Turmeric – the added gingery flavor masks the funky flavors from dishes like fish and chicken.

Recipe Variations

  • Mexican Style – you can add cumin and more chili powder to add Mexican flavors to our seasoned salt. Or you can also try my Taco Seasoning here.
  • Mediterranean – adding herbs like rosemary and basil adds a Mediterranean touch to this DIY seasoning.
  • Italian – just add basil and oregano and you’re all set. Or you can opt to use Italian Seasoning instead.
  • Low-Sodium or Salt-Free – just reduce or omit the salt completely for a healthier version of this seasoning.

Storage Instructions

  • Just place the homemade seasoned salt inside a clean and dry sealed container or glass jar.
