What Is All-Purpose Seasoning?

It’s a seasoning blend of salt, pepper, garlic and onion powder, dried herbs, and spices. It is often used to season any savory dish to make it more flavorful.

All-Purpose Seasoning is pretty basic, unlike other seasonings, such as Creole Seasoning, which has distinct flavors. It enhances the flavor of your dishes while maintaining your dish’s main flavor.

You can easily customize this seasoning with your favorite herbs and spices. It can be spicy, sweet, or salt-free, whatever rocks your boat. Just mix everything and place it in a jar, and voila! Your very own house seasoning you can use anytime. Oh yes!

All you need for salt-free all-purpose seasoning

Recipe Ingredients

These guys are easy to find in your local grocery store. My favorite brands are McCormick, Maggi, and Lawry’s. But I realized it’s better to make my own from scratch. Not only is it easy to make, but you can also ditch the unnecessary additives and preservatives with homemade. 😉

  • Spices – Our homemade seasoning blend is full of savory flavors from garlic and onion powder, black pepper, celery seed, and paprika. These may be simple ingredients, yet they deliver fantastic flavors to any meal. Sometimes I go crazy on the garlic powder and put more than what the recipe calls for. And if you’re a fan of Cajun flavor, I suggest doubling the amount of paprika. You’re welcome. 😉
  • Herbs – I only added two – thyme and oregano. You only need a tiny bit to add subtle hints of herby flavor in the background. Adding too much might be too overpowering. Dried basil and dill weed are also great.

How to Make All-Purpose Seasoning

How to make all-purpose seasoning

Combine and Mix

  • Mix All Ingredients – Combine all the ingredients – garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, paprika, thyme, oregano, celery seeds, and salt (optional) in a bowl or jar. Stir or shake the jar until all the ingredients are thoroughly combined. (Photos 1-4)
  • Store and Use Anytime – Store it in any sealed container (or zip lock bag) and use it as needed. It is excellent for all types of meat and seafood.

Recipe Variations

  • Spicy – Oh, it’s as simple as adding hot pepper flakes or cayenne pepper to the mix. Add as much as you wish, depending on your preferred level of spiciness.
  • Salt-Free – From the name itself, just omit the salt from the recipe, and you’re good to go. 👌
  • Sweet – You can also add a bit of sweetness with about half a teaspoon of sugar to give your tastebuds a little tickle.
  • Greek-Inspired – Greek all-purpose seasoning is bolder than our regular all-purpose seasoning mix because it contains cinnamon, nutmeg, and marjoram.
  • More Umami – Make our homemade seasoning tastier with the addition of your favorite bouillon powder – beef, pork, or chicken. And no, it doesn’t matter whatever kind of bouillon powder you add; they will all yield spectacular flavors to your dishes.

Tips and Tricks

  • Pulse everything in a food processor or blender if you want your homemade all-purpose seasoning with a fine texture.
  • Transfer your homemade seasoning into an empty salt shaker for easier use. Don’t forget to add some raw rice grains so that it won’t harden.
  • Store the seasoning in a dry, cool place to avoid excess moisture.
  • You can also add cornstarch to the mix to prevent the herbs from clumping. Adding a food-grade silica gel packet also works.

Make-Ahead Instructions

You can totally make this seasoning ahead and use it anytime to season your meat, stews, soups, etc. Just store it properly to prevent hardening and clumping.

Serving and Storage Instructions

Aside from making our dish extra sassy and flavorful, this all-purpose seasoning makes an excellent giveaway, too. I usually put it in a pretty jar with a ribbon, and it’s perfect for special occasions, such as Christmas, birthdays, and whenever you don’t want to show up empty-handed at a friend’s house. Effortless yet fancy and elegant, indeed. ❤️

You can store our homemade seasoning in a jar or any airtight container at room temperature. And it will stay fresh and will last for up to 3 months.

Tip: Keep our all-purpose seasoning away from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture to keep it fresh as long as possible. Also, use an airtight container and keep the lid closed when not in use, as it will turn bland quickly if left open.

FAQs

What is all-purpose seasoning?

It is a versatile blend of spices and herbs you can add to any savory dish. It’s as simple as salt, pepper, onion, and garlic powder. The seasonings give character to any dish by enhancing its flavor without altering or taking away its base flavor.

What can you use instead of all-purpose seasoning?

Technically, you can use any seasoning you prefer depending on your dish. For example, you can use Cajun Seasoning to add more authentic Creole flavor to your meal. Or taco seasoning to add Mexican flair. And Italian seasoning perfectly compliments pasta dishes.

Spice vs. Herb

Spices can come from the bark, fruit, stem, root, flower, or seed. Think ginger, cinnamon, garlic, and dill seed. Herbs are the green leafy part. Think oregano, dill weed, mint, basil, etc. They all have a place in my heart and my spice (herb) rack.
